Als Alternative Lösung, die zwar nicht optimal aber immer noch besser als ein MS Word Dokument ist, bietet sich für von mehreren Autoren bearbeitete Dokumente das semi-proprietäre RTF-Format an. Dieses hat in seiner ursprünglichen Form eine Spezifikation und kann von fast jeder Textverarbeitungssoftware gelesen werden.

Wenn der Text vom Empfänger nicht unbedingt weiter bearbeitet werden muss, bietet sich das offene HTML - Format an. Es kann mit jedem Web-Browser gelesen und durch jeden Texteditor bearbeitet werden. Für den Fall, dass eine präzise Formatierung der Seiten notwendig sein sollte, z.B. als Vorbereitung zum Drucken, sind die offenen Formate PS und PDF die beste Lösung. Bie wissenschaftlichen Texten sind TeX und DVI die besten Lösungen.
