Τα ιδιόκτητα φορμά δεν είναι φορμά ανταλλαγής. Τα περισσότερα από τα δεδομένα που αποθηκεύονται σε ιδιόκτητα φορμά και προορίζονται για διασπορά ή ηλεκτρονική έκδοση μπορούν εύκολα να μετατραπούν σε ανάλογα ανοικτά φορμά.
Κύρια ιδιόκτητα φορμά που πρέπει να αποφεύγονται είναι π.χ.:
