Musepack (MPC)
Musepack is an audio format which guarantees good quality. It is not lossless, but it is protected in a way that makes it impossible to notice the difference between the original wave archive and the MPC archive which is smaller in size.
It is a format based on the MPEG-1 Layer-2 / MP2 algorithm, but it is being constantly developed so that it is currently in an advanced state, with a lot of open source and optimized code.
It's the ideal format for those who want
quality without having to use a lossless format which, due to its size, wouldn't be as easy to transport and archive than a lossy format like Musepack.
There are encoders and decoders for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.
There are Plug-ins for XMMS (Linux) and WinAMP (Windows) and a wide number of other programs support this format (native support, or with plug-ins).
The project was born thanks to Andree Buschmann and it is currently maintained and developed by Frank Klemm.
